The Weirdest Dot-Bomb Story So Far

High-flying dot-coms are hurtling back toward Earth, trailing pink slips. Sites seen staffing down this month include online toy retailer KBkids.com, CarOrder.com and "in our acceleration on a path to profitability," recently aborted IPO AltaVista.com.

Most dramatic though, is the streaming-media site Pixelon. Based in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Pixelon stood out last year in a period of extravagant loss leaders and publicity stunts, blowing $12 million of the $30 million it raised on iBash, a one-night launch party at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Last week the company laid off its 55 remaining employees in a bid to stave off creditors, restructure and raise new money.
