GPS Systems More Accurate for the Rest of Us

In case you needed a reason not to join the armed forces, President Clinton yesterday announced a plan that will bring military-grade global positioning to civilians. For years the satellite signals have been deliberately fuzzed to protect national security. Broadcasts of the new, unscrambled data began last night at 8 p.m. EDT, increasing the pinpoint accuracy from 100 yards to 20.

"It's rare that someone can press a button and make something you own instantly more valuable, but that's exactly what's going to happen," said White House science adviser Neal Lane. Consumers who have already purchased GPS devices will find that they are as much as 25 times more accurate today than they were yesterday. (The math works out thanks to the magic of squaring.)
