Court: MP3.com Wrong on Music Copyrights

The Empire Strikes Back. The music industry finally won one of its lawsuits against the world of digital downloads. On Friday a U.S. federal court ruled that MP3.com is on the wrong side of copyright law for helping users store Internet copies of their audio CDs. The music site could be liable for billions in damages.

"We are pleased with the court's decision today," said Hilary Rosen, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, the trade group that represents the record companies. RIAA also sued Diamond over the first portable MP3 players in 1998, and is currently trying to stop another MP3 network run by Napster.
