SOUTH KOREA . . . "SHE IS ALIVE!"

Twelve days after the epic collapse of a 500-store complex in Seoul, rescue workers came upon Yoo Ji-hwan, a surprisingly healthy 19-year-old sales clerk who had survived under the mountain of rubble on drippings of rainwater and a whole lot of moxie. Yoo was dragged from a dark pocket not far from where a 21-year-old man was pulled out alive on Sunday. (At least 24 others survived; 219 were killed.) Her mother screamed deliriously from the rescue site, "She is alive! She is alive!" and then broke down in tears. "I thought that I would be squeezed to death," Yoo told reporters of the concrete slabs that settled on top of her. "But I thought about my mother and didn't lose courage. Now, I want to go home and drink a glass of coffee with ice cubes in it."
