A day after Sen. Jesse Helms' slashing attack on homosexuals, accompanied by threats to curb AIDS funding, President Clinton responded today with a call for "national civility." Speaking at Georgetown University (his alma mater), Clinton said: "Gay people who have AIDS are still our sons, our brothers, our cousins -- are citizens. They're Americans, too." On Wednesday, Clinton had sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole and House Speaker Newt Gingrich, asking them to work to help pass funding for the Ryan White CARE act. Congressional critics have accused Helms of blocking the bill's passage, a charge he denies.
