The Court let stand without comment a 1990 law that requires pornographic filmmakers and photographers to provide proof that their subjects are at least 18 years old. The law, part of the Child Protection Restoration and Penalties Enhancement Act, requires producers of material with "actual sexually explicit conduct" to keep and make available records of the ages of anyone shown. The American Library Association and others had challenged the law, saying it violated free speech rights by requiring such records even for subjects who were obviously much older than 18.
