Dot-Com Registrar Goes for $21 Billion

VeriSign, the leading provider of digital signatures, announced Tuesday that it's buying Network Solutions in a $21 billion stock swap. A few years ago the deal would have ranked as one of the largest corporate mergers in history; these days it's just another day in dot-com land.

What's VeriSign getting? Since 1992 Network Solutions has been the sole government-licensed registry for dot-com (and dot-net and dot-org) Internet domain names. The U.S. Commerce Department started opening up the process last year, but Network Solutions is still essentially a monopoly. It has recently expanded its services to include basic e-commerce and security services for customers. MORE
