California Gov. Pete Wilsonhas no intention of carrying the pro-choice banner in the GOP presidential primaries next year. Despite his longstanding support for abortion rights, Wilson aides said today, thegovernor has decided not to press his partyas promised to delete theRepublican platform's strict anti-abortion language. The flak came in from both sides:Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, the only other GOP candidate who supports abortion rights, chided Wilson for "obviously bowing, letting principles be subordinated by politics." AndRalph Reed, executive director of the increasingly influential Christian Coalition, said: "It is not enough to gain pro-life votes to say merely that you do not seek to remove the platform plank."
