ALLISON COMES ASHORE

Hurricane Allison, the season's first, hit the beaches today and quickly fizzled into a tropical storm after dumping several inches of rain on Florida's Gulf Coast and causing severe flooding in some areas. Several mobile homes were destroyed by tornadoes in the area. However, the predicted hurricane-level winds never materialized, and the damage was far less than had been feared.
