Actor Christopher Reeve, who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident on May 27, underwent risky, all-day surgery today in Virginia to stave off further damage to his spinal cord. The operation, which has triggered heart attacks in some patients, was expected to allow Reeve to be propped up in bed, to breathe more easily and to fight off recurrences of pneumonia. But the 42-year-old actor will likely remain on a respirator for life.
