The Clinton administrationrenewed most favored nation trading status for China for one more year, despite Beijing's "unacceptable record on human rights." While noting that "China continues to deny its citizens freedom of speech, association and religion, and fails to guarantee humane treatment of prisoners," White House press secretary Mike McCurry noted that "broad engagement with China . . . offers the best prospect for progress in all areas of concern to us."
