On the heels of a yearlong study that found "a number of instances in which things went wrong," Pentagon officials today unveiled dozens of policy changes to hold officers accountable for sex discrimination within their commands, while insisting that they can control sexual harassment in the ranks. "Our general conclusions are that most of the time we deal with these policies pretty effectively," said Edwin Dorn, undersecretary of defense for personnel. Officials disputed a University of Minnesota study this month that said 90 percent of women under 50 surveyed reported that they were sexually harassed in the military (Pentagon figure: 64 percent).Mark Thompson, TIME Defense correspondent, says military branches already follow most of the 48 new guidelines.
