DEATH TO GO

The body of a 27-year-old man was found in Dr. Jack Kevorkian's van today. The van was parked outside the sheriff's office in Pontiac, Mich. Earlier, Kevorkian had attended the suicide of the man, Nicholas John Loving, who suffered from the degenerative nerve disorder known as Lou Gehrig's disease. His was the second suicide Kevorkian had observed this week. At a press conference this afternoon, Kevorkian's lawyer claimed that Loving's body was delivered by van to avoid the "circus" atmosphere at previous suicides. That explanation rings false, says TIME Detroit bureau chiefWilliam McWhirter: "It's clearly publicity on the evening news that keeps Dr. Kevorkian alive." The two deaths this week are the first since the U.S. Supreme Court last month refused to hear Kevorkian's appeal of a Michigan ruling rejecting the constitutional right to assisted suicide. But McWhirter says Kevorkian's arrest is probably not imminent: "He wants to lure authorities into some kind of a show trial, and I think they're are still reluctant to give it to him."
