" A burly, chatty melodrama about imminent annihilation, "Crimson Tide" is ostensibly a tale of officers on an American sub faced with a Russian nuclear threat and their response to it. What the film's really about, says TIME criticRichard Corliss, is executive stress, with the officers really "middle management types agonizing over fuzzily transmitted orders from their boss, who happens to be the President." Although he has reservations about the film's quality, Corliss says with star power from Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, "Crimson Tide" is a safe bet as the summer's first big hit.
