An attorney for Deputy White House Counsel Bruce Lindsey noted today that the 1990 campaign, of which Lindsey was treasurer, made all spending public immediately after the election: "It is mystifying that anyone would believe he would break the law to try to keep secret information that he filed publicly just a few days later." Whitewater prosecutors have officially notified Lindsey, one of President Clinton's closest friends and aides, that they may seek to indict him for allegedly trying to conceal cash transactions during Clinton's 1990 gubernatorial campaign. Administration officials disclosed late Thursday that Lindsey has known for months of thepossible indictment. And so has President Clinton, who aides say even privately continues to give his fellow Arkansan full support. "The president has known the status of the inquiry for some time," presidential spokesman Mike McCurry has said. "He is convinced Bruce did nothing wrong."
