CIA director-nominee John Deutch, the tough-talking deputy defense secretary whom President Clinton turned to after another nomination went awry, is expected to be unanimously confirmed by the Senate tonight or early Monday, TIME national security correspondent Douglas Waller reports. In the wake of Deutch's promises toclean house at the agency, Waller says, three top CIA officials have already resigned or retired. At the same time, he says, several remaining senior officials are worried that the CIA director's imminent promotion to the Cabinet -- a status not held since William Casey served under President Reagan -- could revive the temptation to give CIA analysis a political slant. "The CIA prides itself on being able to give independent analysis even when it conflicts with a president's foreign policy initiatives," Waller notes.
