Fighting intensified in Groznyas a leader of the Chechen military promised a big offensive during President Clinton's summit meeting withRussian President Boris Yeltsinin Moscow next week. While the Chechen fighting continues to be a sore point in US-Russian relations,TIME Moscow correspondent Yuri Zarakhovichsays the reaction among Muscovites is decidedly low- key. "People have become indifferent here. Their lives are so difficult now as it is and they're mainly concerned with surviving. They don't have time to worry aboutwhat's going on in Chechnya."
