A large study of Irish families has uncovered the first evidence of a schizophreniagene, information that should soon allow better treatment and possibly prevention of the disorder. The federal study, published in the May issue of the journal Nature Genetics, drew on 186 Irish extended families in which at least two members had schizophrenia or a related disorder. The gene lies in chromosome 6.
