Ten days after undergoing a surprise review, aFlorida hospital plagued by disastrous mistakeslost the accreditation needed to continue receiving Medicare payments. In recent months at University Community hospital, one patient had the wrong leg amputated, another was killed when his ventilator was mistakenly shut off, and a doctor tied off a fallopian tube in a female patient who had not authorized the procedure. The hospital has 20 days to appeal the finding, which could cost it over $50 million in federal payments.
