Second-term North Georgia Rep. Nathan Deal, 52, bolted the Democratic Party to join the Republicans today, giving the GOP a 231-203 edge in the House. Deal, who already had been voting with Republicans on economic issues, said he could no longer cope with the "schizophrenia" of being a conservative Democrat. He is the third Capitol Hill Democrat to switch parties since the last election.
