Researchers at Duke University say that the ailments collectively known as Gulf War Syndrome may have been caused by a combination of anti-nerve gas pills and insecticides given to soldiers to protect them from Iraqichemical weapons. In the $150,000 study, funded by Ross Perot, researchers gave chickens some of the combinations of chemicals that the soldiers were exposed to and found that in every case the chickens suffered nervous system damage similar to that experienced by the veterans. The preliminary findings have yet to be confirmed by further research. None of three previous studies conducted by Pentagon researchers reached this conclusion, notesTIME Pentagon correspondent Mark Thompson.
