California Angels slugger and former NFL running back Bo Jackson told USA Today that he is leaving pro sports for good, effective immediately. Jackson was sidelined from sports by a 1991 football injury, then quickly returned to baseball with an artificial hip. "It was pretty clear that his condition would deteriorate to the point that he would have to retire," says TIME sports writer Steve Wulf, while lauding Jackson's power and speed. "He was the greatest athlete that I've ever seen . . . when he was healthy."
