Billionaire Bill Gates is joining forces with thenew Hollywood studio DreamWorks SKGrun by moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen.Gates' software powerhouseMicrosoft will produce interactive software and explore other forms of computerized entertainment in a 50-50, $30 million joint venture called DreamWorks Interactive. The operation will have studios in both Los Angeles and at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash. Gates and Spielberg said today that Microsoft will also be a minority investor in DreamWorks SKG, which was formed last fall.TIME San Francisco bureau chief David Jacksonsays the deal means that the interactive end of the business will have the same muscular standing as DreamWorks' much-anticipated movie, music, animation and television projects. The first DreamWorks Interactive products are slated to hit the market by Christmas 1996.
