TIME Mexico City bureau chief Laura Lopez says Salinas, like many top officials from his old regime, has recently received death threats. Sources in President Zedillo's office tell Lopez that Salinas may have also been worried about the approach of the March 23 anniversary of former presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio's assassination. Former Salinas appointees are under investigation for plotting the murder, and Zedillo had promised to find the killers within a year.
