New NAACP Chairwoman Myrlie Evers-Williams left her dying husband's bedside on Saturday to be present for the close vote that elected her, and to preside over her first meeting as chair. Early this morning, Walter Williams died of cancer. "She got home just in time for him to recognize her," says TIME's White. "It was literally a choice between life and death. He told her, 'It's too important, you have to go.'" Evers-Williams lost her first husband, civil rights leader Medgar Evers, to an assassin's bullet three decades ago.
