Apple Can't Get Enough G4 Chips

Apple Computer's Steve Jobs warned yesterday that company sales and profits are going to be leaner for the last three months because it can't get enough of the high-speed G4 chips at the heart of the company's silvery new desktop computer unveiled in August. "Apple has received orders for over 150,000 Power Mac G4s since the product was announced three weeks ago," said Jobs, "and we regret that we will not be able to ship them all this quarter."

The G4 is the first processor for a desktop system able to speed through 1 billion operations per second, enabling Apple to tout its new line as a "supercomputer." Company fanfare even includes a television ad comparing the G4 Mac to an armored tank because the processor speed put the computer on an old-time list of restricted military exports. MORE >>
