The first widespread survey of Chinese consumers suggests they are eager to buy color TVs, eye shadow and other personal goods. According to The Gallup Organization''s new nationwide poll of 3,400 households in every region of China (except Tibet), 32 percent of the Chinese households plan to buy a color TV within the next two years, and 22 percent said they were planning to buy a washing machine, despite a reported median income of just $500 a year. TIME deputy chief of correspondents Richard Hornik points out, though, that Gallup surveyed mostly urbanites, who are wealthier. About 80 percent of China''s population lives in rural areas.
