DOLE SAYS HE'LL RUN IN '96

As 461 people in the audience waved canned hams,Senate Majority Leader Bob Doleannounced on tonight's David Letterman show that he's going torun for president next year. Earlier in the evening, in a pre-taped interview for the PBS show "Talking With David Frost," Dole indicated that if he runs, he may promise to serve for just a single term if elected. Talking to Frost, the 71-year-old Kansas Republican dismissed concerns about his age and vigor: "If I felt as old as I am, I probably wouldn't be here." There! TIME congressional correspondent Karen Tumulty notes that Dole topped himself by making it official on Letterman. Dole also unveiled his Top Seven ("We cut everything by 30 percent" ) Ways To Balance The Budget. And the top way: "Arkansas? Sell it."
