Judge Lance Ito rebukedO.J. Simpson's defense lawyers for bringing in witnesses at the eleventh hour and instructed the jury to disregard references to six such witnesses in last week's opening statement by the defense. In an unusual ruling, Ito said he would allow prosecutor Marcia Clark to add approximately ten minutes to the opening statement she delivered last week, so that she may point out inconsistencies in the defense presentation. Ito also told jurors that the defense had violated the law in withholding information from the prosecution, and had caused delays in the trial. He forbade the defense team from calling the new witnesses until the end of their case. Among the witnesses described in court last week by Simpson attorney Johnnie Cochran was a woman who allegedly will testify that she saw four men running away from the crime scene the night of the murders.
