DISEASE THREATENS JAPAN QUAKE VICTIMS

Already dealing with fires and equipment shortages, Japanese officials are now worried about the spread of infectious disease in the wake of the Kobe quake. Mounds of garbage have started piling up on Kobe streets. In addition, many of the shelters have inadequate toilet facilities. The government today admitted confusion in its response to the quake, whose death toll continues to rise. So far, 4,555 bodies have been recovered and 665 people are still missing.
