One day after theRepublicans took charge in both housesof Congress, President Clinton and GOP leaders met to look for ways to cooperate in the coming legislative season. Speaker Newt Gingrich characterized the White House session as "a very, very positive meeting overall" and warned reporters "not to rush off and immediately try to find some way to get a catfight started." For his part, Clinton said he would be glad to sign the first piece of legislation now racing through Congress: one that will force the body to obey the same rules that apply to private businesses. "My job is to work with them and to try to help build this country, and that's what I'm going to do," Clinton said.
