While potential presidential contender Quayle is laid up, another much anticipated 1996 GOP candidate has snatched his hat out of the ring. Former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney said today that he won't run. A Cheney friend told the Associated Press that Cheney didn't want to put his family through the ordeal of a campaign. The long list of GOP hopefuls still waiting in the wings includes Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, former Education Secretary Lamar Alexander, Senator Phil Gramm of Texas, former Secretary of State James Baker and former Housing Secretary Jack Kemp.
