U.S. AUDITORS URGE $1.3 MILLION BUSH CAMPAIGN PAYBACK

Federal Election Commission auditors say that President Bush's 1992 re-election campaign improperly obtained $1.3 million from the U.S. Treasury and are recommending it be returned to the government. The repayment total is the highest ever recommended by the FEC. The issue will be considered by FEC commissioners on Thursday. FEC auditors concluded that the Bush-Quayle campaign improperly assigned some expenses to the primaries thereby vastly increasing the amount of federal matching funds to which it was entitled.
