Susan Smith-- the South Carolina woman who faked a carjacking and then sent her sons to a watery grave in a lake -- decided at the last minute not to stay in the car as her children plunged to their deaths. Smith -- still on 24-hour suicide watch -- made the statements in her confession, released by her lawyer to CNN. "I wanted to end my life so bad and was in my car, ready to go down that ramp into the water and I did go part way, but I stopped," CNN says she wrote. "I went again and I stopped. Then I got out of the car a nervous wreck . . . I dropped to the lowest when I allowed my children to go down that ramp into the water without me. I took off running and screaming, 'Oh God, oh God no. What have I done.' " But her lawyer, David Bruck, also condemned a Newsweek story -- picked up by other news outlets -- that says Smith watched one of her children struggle. Bruck called the story "made up." Bruck also says that a judge asked that he no longer discuss the case with the media.Post your opinion on theCrimebulletin board.s
