"CARJACK" . . . MOM HECKLED AS AUTOPSY SAYS BOYS DROWNED

Residents of Union, S.C. -- who just two days ago were united in a desperate search for two missing children -- today heckled the boys' mother as she was brought to court to face charges of drowning them in a nearby lake. Authorities arrested the woman, Susan Smith, 23, after they said she confessed to the crime. Prosecutors said the crime qualifies for the death penalty. She was held in isolation -- for her protection -- in a nearby prison as family members and bitter neighbors struggled to make sense of the tragedy. Press reports suggested, meanwhile, that Smith's new boyfriend was reluctant to take responsibility for the boys. An autopsy released today found that the boys -- Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months -- had drowned, strapped to their seats.
