ROME: It's not just casual Friday; women all over Italy squeezed into denim today to protest Justice Gennaro Tridico's overturning of a rape conviction on the grounds that the victim had worn jeans. He ruled that it was impossible to remove jeans without the wearer's consent. "Women here are understandably outraged," says TIME correspondent Greg Burke. "But even Italian feminists have very different standards on issues such as sexual harassment and the abuse of women -- things that would get people fired from their jobs in the U.S. pass almost unnoticed here." And it'll probably take more than denim demos to change that.
