A telephone call from Al Gore to Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams ended a 20-year ban on official U.S. contacts with the political wing of the Irish Republican Army. It was the latest benefit of an IRA-declared cease-fire that went into effect September 1. Adams is currently on a whirlwind tour in the U.S. drumming up support for increased economic aid to Northern Ireland.
