Military sources revealed to TIME Pentagon Correspondent Mark Thompson the defense is likely to plead that overwork and exhaustion caused the crew to make a judgement error. AWACs have been deployed in many areas where U.S. troops are engaged, and "Air Force officials acknowledge that the crews have been working very hard," Thompson says. "That fact is likely to be a key element in the case."
