GATE CRASHERS

No President or his family has ever been harmed inside the White House, but the grounds have seen their share of trouble. In an eerily similar-sounding case in 1974, an Army private stole a helicopter, landed it on the White House South Lawn, was felled by shotgun wounds and was hauled away for psychiatric examination. In 1976 a man tried to ram his beat-up pickup truck through the White House gate but underestimated the strength of its solid steel bars.
