Launching another rhetorical volley, the White House said its "patience is wearing thin" on the Haitian military junta's refusal to go gentle into exile. The Pentagon upped the invasion ante by announcing that seven cargo ships are being activated for possible use in a Haiti operation. Despite the fist shaking, TIME Pentagon correspondent Mark Thompson sees no indications the military has changed its time frame for a possible invasion in late September or early October. "Plainly an orchestration campaign is now under way," he says. And the White House's hair-trigger statements? "I suppose that's just smart. The sense you get now is maybe they want to throw people off, so that when they're expected to zig, they zag."
