General Motors reached a tentative settlement with the striking United Auto Workers union, which had crippled the company's car and truck production. The two-day strike by 3,500 workers at a plant in Anderson, Indiana, led to the shutdown of eight other plants in the Midwest and Canada. By midday Thursday nearly 30,000 workers were sent home or told not to report for duty.
