The Power of One is a new TIME section covering people and organizations making a difference in the lives of others. To supplement the stories in this section, here are some online resources for those interested in community service.

City Year
Calling itself an "action tank" for national service, City Year promotes community service as a means for building a stronger democracy. City Year trains young volunteers to give back to their communities to instill in them the value of service and to improve the lives of those in need in major cities around the country. To find out more about City Year's history and its ongoing and upcoming programs, go to www.cityyear.org

Donors Choose
Donors Choose lets you help teachers with what they need most. Individuals can fund specific student projects that teachers post on the site. Donors Choose has created an online marketplace that aims to improve public education by providing those who care about schools with a way of helping out. Donors Choose envisions a nation where students in every community have the resources they need to learn. For more information or to lend a hand, visit www.donorschoose.org

Publicolor
With schools in frequent need of repair and revitalization, Publicolor encourages volunteers to help spruce them up. It's an innovative program that serves to transform public spaces in neglected schools and neighborhood facilities through the powers of vibrant color and organized collaboration. Publicolor volunteers work in teams to paint classrooms, cafeterias and more. Visit www.publicolor.org for more information on getting involved.

New York City Teaching Fellows
In the spring of 2000, the NYC Teaching Fellows program was launched to address the most severe teacher shortage in New York City's public schools in decades. The Fellowship recruits mid-career professionals, recent graduates, and even retirees to teach in high-need schools in the nation's largest school system. Today, the NYC Teaching Fellows program is the largest alternative certification program in the country and among the most selective. For more information, visit www.nycteachingfellows.org.

Fund for Public Schools
The Fund for Public Schools is the non-profit organization affiliated with the New York City Department of Education (DOE). The Fund plays a pivotal role in improving public education in New York City by strengthening the DOE's relationship with the private sector and supporting system-wide reforms. Working with the DOE's Office of Strategic Partnerships, the Fund secures critical funding for education reform initiatives; helps businesses create partnerships and programs to support city schools; and reaches out to the entire city to create awareness about the needs of the public schools.
