BARBARA BUSH, A PRO-CHOICER REVEALED

Abortion rights supporters who always suspected Barbara Bush was on their side were right. In an interview for the ABC newsmagazine 20/20, to be aired Sept. 9, the former First Lady says she backs a woman's right to choose, but kept mum during her pro-life husband's tenures as president and vice president. She also says George never waffled on the issue, as is rumored: "He thinks it's killing." Pro-choicers are giving the announcement a cool reception. Kate Michelman, president of the National Abortion Rights Action League, told TIME Daily: "Her public support comes a little too late for the millions of American women who had to endure the insulting and callous policies of the Bush Administration."
