'Armageddon': Big, But...
The Bruce Willis action picture "Armageddon" brought in an estimated $34.8
million this July 4th weekend, far more than the $19.8 million by last
week's No. 1 (and this week's No. 2), Eddie Murphy's "Dr. Dolittle."
Rounding out the top five box office draws over the holiday weekend were
"Mulan," "Out of Sight" and "The X-Files Movie." "Armageddon"'s ticket
sales were considered less than Earth-shattering, considering its $160
million budget. In its first five days the film brought in $52.9 million,
putting it right behind this summer's other top action
flick, "Godzilla," which opened with $55.5 million over the four-day
Memorial Day weekend yet proved to be a disappointment in the long haul.
