AMTRAK WRECK INJURES SCORES OF TRAVELERS

At least 16 people were hospitalized and about 110 more were hurt in Amtrak's eighth train derailment since 1992. National Transportation Safety Board investigators are still trying to explain how nine cars of the Lake Shore Limited, bound for Chicago from New York City, screeched off its rails about 3:45 a.m. EDT on a heavily wooded straightaway in western New York State. One potential clue: three miles before the accident, rail workers watching the train pass say they saw sparks shooting off the wheels. This was far from Amtrak's worst disaster. On Sept. 22, 1993, the Sunset Limited plunged into a foggy bayou in Alabama, killing 47 people.
