Haitian police fired shots above the heads of pro-democracy activists and roughed up several of them. One person was arrested. Police and gunmen in civilian clothes raided the Port-au-Prince headquarters of the "Haitian National Party for Democracy and Progress," a grass-roots coalition formed in June to support exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's return. One of its leaders is Port-au-Prince mayor Evans Paul IS HE MAYOR NOW?, who has kept a low profile since the military junta's 1991 coup.
