FIRES AND FLOODS . . . DEATH TOLL CLIMBS

The past 24 hours have included some of the deadliest natural disasters in the nation's recent history. In Glenwood Springs, Colorado, wind whipped up one of dozens of forest fires now ravaging Western states, trapping 52 fire fighters and killing 13. One fire fighter was still missing this afternoon. At least 17 people have been killed by floods that continued to swamp towns in the Southeast. Rising waters in Georgia claimed all the known fatalities; divers were still searching for five people this evening. Damages there already amount to more than $60 million, and watersare expected to crest Saturday at 20 feet above flood stage.parpar
