Almost half a million Japanese are wearing their hearts in their sleeves, taking advantage of beeper technology to create a pulsing electronic personal ad to attract a mate in a crowd. The “Lovegety” (yes, it’s literal) is an electronic oval disk that projects your preferences -- a choice of “karaoke,” “chat” or “friends” (reputedly implying something a little less platonic) -- into a crowd and alerts you to the presence of any other Lovegetys on compatible settings. An upgrade in August will increase the device’s range from 15 to 100 feet, and add the options of “movie,” “drink” and “dinner.” So, uh, is that a beeper in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?
