Joe Kennedy Leaves Congress

Representative Joe Kennedy's departure from Congress comes as little surprise -- the political career of Bobby Kennedy's oldest son was seriously damaged when he withdrew from the Massachusetts gubernatorial race last year, haunted by criticism over his handling of his first marriage.

Once the ranking Kennedy of the next generation, the Massachusetts congressman said today he would not seek reelection, but would pursue public service through the private sector. Having been deeply affected by the death of his brother Michael in a skiing accident in January, he also said he planned to spend more time with his family.

Last year cousin John Kennedy Jr. described Rep. Kennedy and his late brother -- who was investigated for allegedly having an affair with an underage baby-sitter -- as "poster boys for bad behavior." The congressman's departure from politics now leaves the field a little more open for the Kennedy on a white horse.
