Britain Seeks Sinn Fein Expulsion

DUBLIN: Britain today moved to formally expel Sinn Fein from the Irish peace talks, casting doubt over the future of the peace process in the region. The move comes after two political killings in Belfast last week were proved to be the work of the Irish Republican Army, to which Sinn Fein is linked. Ejecting Sinn Fein will be formally discussed by participants over the next two days, and the party has threatened both court action and mass protests to block its ouster.

Since permanent expulsion of the only representative of the militant Republican community would render the talks pointless, participants may settle on a temporary expulsion as was meted out to the rival Ulster Democratic Party three weeks ago. Even then, the hard men on both sides of the Republican-Loyalist divide who oppose peace talks will be encouraged by the latest confirmation of their ability to wreck the peace process.
